John Gray is an award-winning composer, musician, engineer and music producer who has provided original music and sound design for clients around the world. For three decades, his productions have been heard on television and in films, as well as in fixed and mobile digital media. His experience and specialization is focused on scoring for motion pictures, video games and national television advertisement.
BIOGRAPHY
Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, John began studying piano at age seven and music theory at age nine. By age eleven, he was a composition and theory student of Dr. David Maves at Duke University. John was later admitted to the North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) as a composition major, studying under Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and former UNCSA President Robert Ward, protégé of Aaron Copeland.
After finishing at UNCSA, John began his professional career touring nationally in R&B and jazz ensembles as a keyboardist and guitarist. After six years of touring, John settled in New York City, where he opened a digital multi-track recording studio on Park Ave South in Manhattan. His company, Grayscore Music Productions, specialized in creating and producing original music and sound design for film, television commercials, and ultimately video games.
The first movie score and sound design John Gray produced was "Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor" which premiered at The Cannes Film Festival in 1990. That same year, John scored his first series of major national commercials including those for Sports Illustrated and Time Warner. John went on to write and produce music for a variety of media, working with many music legends such as Buddy Cage (Bob Dylan's "Blood On The Tracks") and singer-songwriter and guitarist Richie Havens (Woodstock) to name a few.
John Gray released his first album of original songs in 1994, “Forever and a Day” recorded at Sony Studios NYC which went on to receive over 500,000 downloads on the internet.
In 1995 Grayscore Music joined the digital gaming community, producing music and sound design for some of the first desktop computer games - beginning with "Wetlands" by Hypnotix. John received a Davey Award for his music and sound design for "G3DJ," his first mobile platform game for Nokia. Most recently, John produced the score for "Art Island", an Internet game that transcends language barriers designed by Cai Guo-Qiang for kids to virtually play with one another around the world. Art Island is currently on tour in various art galleries throughout China.
For the past 30 years, Grayscore has provided original audio content for clients around the world in collaboration with top media brands and production studios.
